The fifth Generation was an
interesting era for console gaming. This was the generation that
swapped 2D sprites for polygons, D-pads for analog sticks, subtitles
for actual voice overs. It was a fierce battle with each company dueling for
a spot in living rooms across the globe. Each machine met
with varying degrees of success, some stumbling out of the
gate, others downright failed. When the smoke cleared only 3 machines remained with the PlayStation running away with the gold medal. All the same, each had its fair share of
great games. The N64 had Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64,
the PlayStation was
known for Crash Bandicoot and Gran Turismo, Nights into Dreams became a cult
classic on the Saturn and even the 3D0 had a pretty neat racer called Crash n'
Burn. Remember the original need for speed? "The Need for Speed?” yea that
was originally a 3D0 title before it got ported to windows and the PlayStation.

The 5th Generation was home to more than just the 5 consoles mentioned above. SNK, NEC, Pioneer,Fujitsu, Commodore and Apple all had entries in this generation but all failed to gain any traction.
