LG announced the G2 yesterday but is it enough to take on the top dogs of the mobile world? Only time can answer that question. From a spec standpoint however, this thing is packing some serious heat!

Hardware
The G2 brings to the table some unique physical features,
the most prominent of which is the rear mounted volume and power buttons.
According to LG this is a more ergonomic setup but we shall see soon enough.
One thing they did achieve by moving the buttons to the back instead of on the
sides is that extremely thin bezel! Measuring in at only 0.1 inches wide it’s probably
the thinnest bezel ever on a high end smartphone. Now we can’t talk bezel and not
talk about the G2’s display now can we? And what a display it is! A 5.2 inch IPS
panel at 1080p and if I know IPS panels (and I do) this is going to make for a
simply brilliant display! All this is incased in plastic so if you were hoping
for some exotic alloys you best look elsewhere. I personally have no problems
with plastic phones, as long as they are built properly. As the buttons have
been moved to the back of the device, the sides are completely bare except on
the left side which houses the micro-SIM tray. The bottom of the device houses
the 3.5mm headset jack, USB /MHL port, speakers and the primary mic while the
top is home to a secondary noise cancellation mic and an IR Blaster.
Software
On the software side we are dealing with android 4.2.2 Jellybean,
not the latest and greatest build of the dessert flavored OS but you can bet
that LG will update this thing in the near future. That said this isn't stock
android it’s a custom build designed by LG with tailored features to complement
the G2 Hardware. Among these custom designed features is the ability to double
tap the screen to wake and lock the device, a custom multi-task UI called "slide aside" and multi user functionality aka a guest mode. How many times has
someone borrowed your phone to make a call or play a game…whatever the
situation only to get it back with all the icons rearranged or god forbid something
deleted? Well this solves this problem by allowing you to log in to a guest
account protecting your private data from prying eyes meddlesome fingers.
Verdict
This I can say, LG is gunning for the top! If it were left
up to specs alone we could hand LG the trophy now but as we all know specs isn't everything. So like I said before, only time will tell whether or not the
G2 can compete with the kings of the industry, as specs go however the G2 is a
monster!
Amazing? Yes, Must get? Yes
